New open course: G-code Basics for Beginners

CNC Passport Learning Center has launched a new open course for people who are just entering the world of CNC programs. The course is called “G-code Basics for Beginners,” and it is built for a situation many newcomers know well: the commands may look familiar, but the program still feels like a chain of lines without a clear internal logic.

This is where most early mistakes actually begin. The issue is rarely an exotic function. More often, a beginner misses a dangerous Z move, mixes up absolute and incremental coordinates, forgets to check work offsets, or cannot connect a line of code with the machine motion it will produce. That is why a good entry-level course is not just educational decoration. It is a practical way to make the first steps safer.

The new course is built around that exact need. It helps the learner read simple NC programs in sequence, understand what the machine is doing line by line, and notice which parts should be checked before a run. For a beginner, that matters more than rushing into advanced cycles or macro topics without a solid base.

What the course covers

The material covers the topics that usually separate shallow command memorization from real basic understanding. It includes program structure, coordinate systems, G90 and G91 modes, tool movements, feedrate, spindle, coolant, basic editing, simulation, simple cycles, subprograms, and introductory optimization.

The course is currently available in three languages: English, Russian, and Ukrainian. That launch format is deliberate. It is better to release a clear, useful, and stable foundation in several key languages first, and then expand the language coverage further. More translations will be added later.

This already makes the course practical in multilingual learning and work environments. For beginner material, that matters. When the basic logic of a CNC program is explained in a language the learner understands well, early mistakes usually become less frequent and the move toward practice becomes faster.

Who should open it first

The course is not only for people who already see themselves as CNC programmers. It is also useful for new operators, for people moving toward setup work, and for anyone who needs to read simple NC programs with more confidence before toolpath checking, simulation, or careful first edits.

The strength of the course is that it does not try to cover everything at once. It stays with the core logic: how a program is structured, how the machine interprets coordinates, where dangerous moves come from, and what should be checked before a run. That is usually the right starting point for someone who no longer wants to guess the meaning of a program from isolated letters and numbers.
